Praxeology and the New Age of Enlightenment
Most of the time, I write articles about how the political and financial establishment continues to screw up our economy—to the point of no return. Since I’m a positive thinker I often meditate on what it would be like to live in a New Age of Enlightenment, where people understand the laws of praxeology (economics), which of course results in a highly advanced civilization. Would individuals spend their days in the pleasurable pursuits of the body, mind and spirit? What kind of unheard of wonders would develop out of these higher states of existence?
Anyway, let’s mentally take a journey from where we’re at, to an imagined place of enlightenment. It’s up to you whether you consider our journey pretend or a distinct possibility.
First, let’s define praxeology. Praxeology (Human Action) is the study of individuals and their actions. Unfortunately, only a few people possess an awareness of this marvelous science of economics. The reason for the above sad state of affairs is that the enemies of liberty and freedom would prefer that you didn’t learn anything about it. If you understood the laws of human action, you would demand an end to the disastrous policies that absolute moralists, world-improvers and other enemies of the individual have foisted upon “society.”
Now here something that might surprise you and explain the “cracks” in our institutions—cracks which are developing into enormous openings leading straight down into the abyss of economic and social chaos. The decadence and decay you see in our institutions is the swan song of an age that’s swiftly passing by. Of course, the ones in power don’t have any desire to relinquish their privileged positions. They will tell any lie, violate anyone’s liberty and even resort to violence to retain their power positions. That is the reason why economic crisis, big government interventionism, socialist economic policies, wars and terrorism are the rule of the day.
Fortunately, change is in the air. Do you remember the song written by Bob Dylan and sung by Peter, Paul and Mary called “Blowin’ in the Wind?” R.I.P. Mary Travers. I love you.
More people are becoming acquainted with the laws of human action and its better-known part economics. The power structure can try to “keep you dumb.” Their efforts will be in vain. As the Borg in Star Trek say “Resistance is futile.” And they are right. Resistance to the changes taking place in the New Age of Enlightenment is futile.
A revolution in personal development
The coming New Age resulted in an increased interest in spiritual development. Many individuals adopted New Age Spirituality and a daily practice of meditation. They seek a higher awareness and a greater understanding of the world within and the world around them. By the way, the various religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Wicca and others supplied great contributions to the coming New Age of Enlightenment. Also, Ayn Rand’s Objectivism contributed greatly to metaphysical thought.
I would like to mention, that as a philosopher and praxeologist, I have no desire to tread on anyone’s religious beliefs. I spend most of my valuable time refuting erroneous economic beliefs and revealing a more satisfying way to live. As far as I’m concerned you should experience the creator anyway you desire—as long as you don’t force others to believe your way.
Meditation practices result in spiritually aware individuals increasing their sensitivity to the beauty that surrounds them. They enjoy a greater appreciation for the colors and sounds of nature. Their increased sensitivity to music unleashes sublime emotions that most unenlightened people are oblivious to. They experience greater ecstasy and pleasure in their sexual relationships. Fortunately, they reason with a heightened clarity, much more easily integrating complex concepts. They live The Libertarian Way to the fullest.
Enlightened individuals will eventually withdraw their support of the power structure. Absolute moralists and power-mongers may attempt to regain control—but you can’t control individuals who have discovered inner awareness. Oppressive governments and institutions wither away.
Conclusion: The glorious age of mankind
Obviously, Karl Marx dropped the ball about the efficacy of socialism. Ludwig von Mises proved beyond any doubt that socialism cannot achieve the desires ends of equality and prosperity because economic calculation is impossible if you abolish markets. However, Marx did provide us with several insights.
1. Any interference with the workings of the capitalistic system delays the coming of the glorious age of mankind. Mises proved that any government intervention in the economy hopelessly sabotages the marketplace. Events have proven him right.
2. When capitalism reaches its highest state of productivity—the glorious age of mankind will arrive. He was of course wrong about socialism being the glorious age.
3. As we close in on the glorious age of mankind the State will wither away. He didn’t exactly put it in those words but that is the essence of his earlier teachings. Here is actually what will happen.
4. Enough people discover the laws of praxeology and all government intervention in the economy disappears, resulting in the age of unhampered capitalism. The productivity of human effort soars to the stratosphere. Minutes of labor produce what 8 hours or more produces now. In fact, we can’t even envision what productive effort will look like or what it will produce. With all the additional free time available, the powers of the mind and spirit reach unknown heights of awareness and ecstasy.
5. New Age thought (a much-improved version of what we’re currently seeing) results in a significant amount of people discovering the blessings of spiritual enlightenment. Love and harmony reign supreme on earth. Enlightened individuals experience all the pleasure and ecstasy The Libertarian Way of Life offers.
You might be thinking that with the problem of massive government interventionism destroying the economy along with the possibility the “peak oil” theorists might be right about us running out of oil, none of us will be around to experience this “Glorious Age.” In fact, you may believe humanity is doomed or that “Revelations” informs us of the end days.
I understand. In the song “Imagine” John Lennon says “Maybe I’m a dreamer” and maybe I am.
However, I believe hope is the perfect tonic for the spirit. Let’s take a drink and pass it around. Personally, I believe we are eternal and will evolve along with the systems of mankind. We will be around to experience it. If I’m wrong, we can at least experience the satisfaction of being the fathers and mothers of the New Age of Enlightenment. No matter what, we are all victorious. How wonderful!
